For my AP Physics C: Electricity & Magnetism final project during my senior year, I decided to have some fun and recreate Snoopy's doghouse from "A Charlie Brown Christmas" with working lights. While most students played it safe with LEDs, I thought it would be more interesting to challenge myself with neon bulbs and the Pearson-Anson effect to create a cool flashing pattern. This unconventional choice not only showed off my circuit knowledge but also earned me some nice bonus points for thinking outside the box.
I designed a circuit powered by 8 nine-volt batteries connected in series (creating a total of 72V) and placed capacitors to store and release electrical charge, which creates the flashing pattern of the Pearson-Anson effect in neon bulbs. The capacitors act like electrical "buckets" that fill up with charge and then discharge quickly, causing the bulbs to flash in sequence rather than staying on constantly. The house construction was actually my favorite part, I got to hand-craft the entire structure using popsicle sticks for the exterior walls, balsa wood for decorative elements, and Model Magic clay to add snow on the roof. This project was great because it let me combine my technical circuit knowledge with some creative building, creating something that was both electrically cool and fun to look at.


The first major hurdle was getting the neon bulbs to work at all, the circuit stubbornly refused to cooperate for weeks, which was pretty frustrating. After lots of head-scratching and testing different components, I finally figured out that the voltage rating of my capacitors was completely wrong for the circuit design, which explained why nothing was happening. Once I swapped them out for properly rated capacitors, everything suddenly came to life, though I still had to get creative with the colors by painting clear neon bulbs with permanent markers since finding pre-colored ones was nearly impossible.
Later in the project, while trying to add a switch to make the circuit more user-friendly, I accidentally created a short circuit that caused the batteries to explode in a rather spectacular fashion. My brother found this incredibly entertaining and made sure to remind me about my "explosive engineering skills" for weeks afterward. While slightly embarrassing, this mistake taught me a valuable lesson about circuit safety and the importance of double-checking connections before powering up high-voltage circuits. Plus it gave my brother some good laughs at my expense.



The completed Snoopy house turned out better than I expected, successfully showing off the Pearson-Anson effect with flashing neon lights that really brought the Charlie Brown Christmas scene to life. The combination of electrical engineering and handcrafted construction created something that definitely stood out among my classmates' projects. This whole experience reminded me how much I enjoy projects that let me blend technical problem-solving with creative expression, and getting bonus points for choosing neon bulbs over the standard LED approach felt pretty rewarding for taking a risk!
